Souda is often insulted and mistreated because he’s “Sonia’s stalker” but you know, like everyone else he has his flaws but he also has his good qualities.
He’s shaped like a friend!
He’s willing to work
hard to achieve his dreams: he told Hinata he would study has much as
possible to become a full-fledged mechanic. He’s genuinely passionate
about it as well, he said he loves the sound of the engines and that he
loves building vehicles even if he can’t drive them. His talent came
in handy in the game and he wanted to use it for good.
Even if it ended badly. Really badly.
Talking about his
dreams: he’s so enthusiastic over his dreams that he dreams big, who
else would dream of building a rocket ship?
He also told Hinata
he’d like to have a family of his own, one day. Isn’t it sweet?
Souda hasn’t a keen
logic or a problem-solving thought pattern. He’s more technical but he does have potential. He said that when he was in middle school a
friend of his needed to copy stuff from his tests. This means that if
he puts his mind into it, he can be talented with his studies as
well.
He’s an honest guy.
As soon as he felt he could trust Hinata he told him all the truth
about himself, that he wears contact lenses, that he dyed his hair,
that he changed his style so he could appear cooler because he used
to feel like a loser. These aren’t things you’d tell everybody and he
talked as if he was making a huge confession. He also feels guilty for having hidden it.
When Saionji pointed this “You’re probably dressed with flashy clothes just to impress people but you’re actually a big loser” he didn’t deny it.
Not only this, but he isn’t afraid to speak his mind either: in the game he fears Kuzuryuu but he does tell him “You wouldn’t talk this big if you weren’t a yakuza” in front of him, he doesn’t lie or pretend to be your friend: if he doesn’t like you, he doesn’t like you.
He doesn’t hold grudges.
Even if his old friend framed him, Souda didn’t care.
In the game, after Kuzuryuu recovered from having cut his stomach, he tells him to never do that again. Kuzuryuu was an asshole to everyone at the beginning, he kept on threatening and insulting people, he was indirectly responsible for Koizumi’s and Pekoyama’s deaths but Souda still seemed to care about his sake.
He pays attention to those around him.
He had little patience and tolerance over Komaeda’s antics in the game (understandable) but he did pay attention to him.
In the fifth trial Souda seemed to get Komaeda’s thought patterns. When they discuss what they have to do to win the trial and to get the right person executed he cites Komaeda’s usual quotes about hope and despair.
He’s big-hearted.
He stood awake for
an entire night so that he could build robot-Nidai. Yes, it was an
attempt to impress Sonia but he took his time to build a little
memento for Nidai’s memory sake. You can’t tell me he didn’t feel sorry for Owari, come on.
Not to mention he built other copies of robot-Nidai outside the Neo World Program using them to fight the meanies x)
He’s a sensitive guy and he does emphasize with the dead but in the mean time, even if he can be a bit of a paranoid, he doesn’t let the killing game break him down. He often comes up with funny and silly ideas, like drinking coconut’s milk with the others, or following the girls and giving a peek to Owari and Nidai’s “affair” at Hinata’s expense x)
He’s hilarious. He does have his moments. Like this one, for example.
This scene in the game makes me laugh everytime, I swear.
He and Hinata make a great duo because they’re the most down to earth of the group. Despite his own weirdness, Souda is one of the most sane and normal guys out there.
And last but not least: he never wanted to kill anyone.
He was a bit mistreated and pretty often offended, he lived in a difficult condition for weeks, he had to stand fear, anxiety, doubt, paranoia, tension, probably sleepless nights, blackmailing, insults, threatening, bulling and hunger but he never lost his mind to the point of murdering. Heheld on until the very end.
Let’s be honest: SDR2 wouldn’t have been the same without him.
